This project focused on re-engineering authentic skid blocks (planks) from the McLaren Formula 1 Team MCL60 cars, driven during the 2023 season by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, transforming them into premium wall art pieces.
The skid block or ‘plank’ is a functional component of a Formula 1® car’s underfloor, introduced in 1994 to regulate ride height and monitor wear. Constructed from high-density Jabroc, it provides a unique material foundation, embedding each piece with genuine race heritage. The concept centred on preserving this authenticity while elevating it through considered graphic design.
Early concepts explored how to translate race data, brand elements and car imagery into a visually engaging format. Emphasis was placed on balancing technical information with visual impact.
The final outcome included a series of four plank designs for each driver, incorporating race details, McLaren branding, and car imagery. A consistent design was applied across both sets to create a cohesive, collectible series.
Additionally, a unique Las Vegas skid plank collection was created for both drivers. The larger plank format provided increased surface area allowed for more expressive artwork, with each design adapting the original style to maximise visual impact while maintaining consistency across the set.
Selected pieces were hand-signed by Lando Norris, enhancing their value as limited-edition collectibles that bridge motorsport and design.
